Family Ties At the heart of the play King Lear by William Shakespeare lies the theme of the relationship between father and child. Lear and Cordelia’s relationship is strong and it is very different than the relationship between Lear, and Cordelia’s sisters, Goneril and Reagan. Lear and Cordelia have different views of what is important in the world, these different views is what ultimately causes their bond to break. The separation of Lear and Cordelia ultimately causes a rift in the play and conflict to occur. The theme of the relationship between a father and his child is also shown through the relationship of Gloucester and Edgar, his â€Å"legitimate† son. Honky Book Report Essay Minority Autobiography Analysis(Book Report)Title: Honky SummaryHonky is the true story of Dalton Conley, a white kid, growing up in a minority community. The story takes place beginning at the end of the 1960s and concluding in the early 1980s and takes us from the authors early childhood to college. Dalton Conley was white, with a Jewish mother and an Irish/English father. Both of Daltons patents were artists. His mother, Ellen, grew up in northern Pennsylvania, the daughter of a dentist, and was a graduate of Penn State University. She was active in the civil rights movement in the early sixties and later spent time in Haiti as a volunteer. She is probably best described as somewhat of a Flower child. Daltons father, Steve, grew up in Connecticut with moderately wealthy parents. He attended college at a small liberal arts school in Wisconsin but never graduated. During his junior year, his father lost his job and business and could no longer afford the tuition. Daltons parents wer e the starving artist type and lived in a tenement in Manhattan. The apartment was in a crime-ridden area and they were robbed several times. The last time they were robbed Daltons mother was able to identify the thief and have him arrested. The thief threatened to kill the entire family upon his release so they decided to move. They applied for and were accepted into a new housing project, The Masaryk Towers, which was largely Black and Hispanic. Living in a predominately minority community and Dalton has no concept of race early on. When told his mother is pregnant he is almost three and completely unaware that both his parents being white will result in a white child. Dalton experiences being a minority among minorities and sees first hand how the cultural differences affect society. Living in a minority area, he attends predominantly a black school where he learns of some differences between the cultures. In school finds, he is the only student who cannot be disciplined with cor poral punishment because black teachers are fearful of striking a white child and his parents are steadfastly against it. Daltons parents use some connections and the address of a friend to have him transferred to a mostly white school after a child molester is caught castrating boys in the bathroom of his school. There he learns what it is like to be white and finds the popular kids are those with the richest parents. Dalton finds himself in a unique spot in his new school because even though he is white, he is poor. On days, he sleeps at a friends house he is unable to buy snacks after school the way his white friends do. He decides he needs money to fit in and takes a job in a local store but is fired because of labor laws relating to minors. Dalton had considered himself a member of both the white school he attended and the minority neighborhood in which he lived. That image was challenged when he realized he was embarrassed to bring his white friend to his house and when his baseball glove was stolen at knifepoint and his neighborhood friends did little to help. This was the point he realized he was an outsider in both worlds. Dalton spent his summers in middle class Pennsylvania camping near his grandparents house. Both he and his sister hated this but knew they were getting to do things their neighborhood peers could only dream about. Dalton and his sister had a difficult time making friends during the summer because they were city kids and the PA kids were rural. When Dalton is about twelve, he becomes friends with a boy names Jerome who lives in his neighborhood. Jerome is the only other boy in his neighborhood who attends his school predominantly white school. He is the type of kid who is liked by all, accepted by both the white and black population. About a year, after they become friends Jerome is shot by a stray bullet and becomes paralyzed. Dalton has trouble dealing with this and ultimately becomes obsessive compulsive having to do everything in twos for fear of bad luck. Government Internet Intervention EssayOne of the stories uses the term nigger to define the villain and this is upsetting to her. The use of this word, by people who for the most part have never interacted with minorities shows how minorities can be guilty until proven innocent. They never even considered the people this was referring to, it was just a foregone conclusion that Blacks were niggers and bad people. These kids were apparently taught racial hatred at an early age. It seems the result of being a minority and forced to grow up in the ghetto started you on a treadmill where escape was almost impossible. But a white kid in the same environment was given more and different opportunities and therefore had a much better chance to improve his/her life situation. Critical Evaluation I found Honky to be an interesting book. It allowed me to gain some perspective on the neighborhood where I grew up and better understand many of the privileges associated with growing up white. I was raised in Roxborough, a predominantly white area in North West Philadelphia. Here, the streets were relatively clean, you could walk to the store without fear, and the schools were among the best in the city. I had taken for granted that this is how things were everywhere and was led to believe that if a neighborhood was bad then the residents were to blame. I wont say I was shocked by what I read because deep down I think everyone knows that growing up in a poor neighborhood affords you fewer of lifes opportunities. I will say that after reading this book you get a much better understanding of how and why some neighborhoods are as they are and why minorities have such a difficult time making a better life for themselves. This book makes it clear that not all neighborhoods are created equal and the minorities who are unfortunate enough to have to live in the depressed areas are caught in a trap. The book makes a strong argument for better means of integration. It tells me that people are a product of their environment and if you live in an area where crime is prevalent then you stand a good chance of becoming a criminal or possibly worse, being labeled a criminal because of your skin color. It also shows me that institutional discrimination is a very real situation and not to be taken lightly. The book makes a strong argument for integration and assimilating the black minority into the mainstream. It is pointed out several times that the people in the neighborhood are doing their best to educate their children but the schools are lacking. Its clear that most of the people who reside in the projects are no different from those in the dominant group. They want what is best for their children and what is best for them but are denied some of the basic services we take for granted that are necessary to make this happen. It also points out that stereotyping makes integration a difficult task. When white kids refer to blacks as niggers, it shows a difficult road ahead. The book makes a compelling argument for integration. We are shown a group of people who, through no fault of their own, are stuck in a cycle of poverty. Daltons escape from this poverty shows the privileges bestowed on whites that made his escape possible. Others in his neighborhood could not have made the transition nearly as easily simply because they were black. Through integration, we could reduce or eliminate the black ghetto. If, for example, schools were funded equally many could escape. Dalton uses the address of a family friend to gain entrance into the better school but this possibility doesnt exist for the black kids because they have no friends in the white neighborhood. The book does however lack some details. We are not introduced to the families of the kids in the projects and have to draw our own conclusions. For example, Daltons mother is diligent in making sure he follows the right path by forcing him to sign contracts stating he wont do this or that. We are not told about the parents of the kids on the bench drinking beer or why parents allowed teachers to use corporal punishment on their children. The picture is sort of one dimensional in that we only are shown the minority group from Daltons perspective. I understand that this is an autobiography but some insight into the other minority families in the story may have helped clarify some points. After reading this book (and taking this class), I find many of the statements and observations of friends and family to be extremely offensive and shortsighted. I would recommend some people I know read this book but they would also need to take this class. I have always been labeled the Only Democrat in the Republican stronghold and my interpretation of this book brings proves that to me. If I were to give this book to some of the people I know, they would discount many of the points made in the book and I would hear things like Of course Dalton succeeded, he is white. That is a sad commentary on some of my friends but unfortunately, it is true. Overall, I found the book both interesting and educational. I hate to admit it but I expected to find the story contained instances of how Dalton was mistreated in the projects. Reading about the experiences Dalton had growing up makes it clear that the rules of the game are different if you are a minority.

Othello: Othello is a general in the army of Venice. He is a Moor, a dark-skinned man born in Africa, and has risen through the ranks of the Venetian army through hard work and success in battle. He is a respected general, but less respected as a person, because of his dark skin and foreign roots. He is an honest man, and believes that people are honest. This makes him naive in many ways. Othello is a passionate man, and deeply loves Desdemona Desdemona: Desdemona is loyal, faithful, and passionately loves Othello. She is shrewd and wise, but is very subtle about it. Iago: Iago is Othello's sword-bearer. He has been passed over for the position of Lieutenant, and this draws out his evil nature. He feels that he has been wronged and cannot accept the position that Othello gives him. Iago is only concerned about himself and his position, and will sacrifice anyone to save himself and his interests. Act I It is night. Tush and Sblood open the play. Though both Roderigo and Iago display a vulgarity of language, Roderigo makes his mark as a gentleman against the coarse soldier speech of Iago. Whilst one of the curled darlings of the nation, he is certainly not darling to Brabantio nor to Desdemona whom he seeks. Iago reveals such a hatred of Othello shared not even by Brabantio. Roderigo may doubt it but it is one of the truest emotions Iago expresses in the play. In his first speech, one motive for his hatred may be found. Othello has chosen Michael Cassio to be his lieutenant instead of Iago and Iago has nothing but scorn for them both: Othello he describes as loving his own pride and purposes and horribly stuffed with epithets of war (1.1.11-13). As we will learn, there is some truth in these judgements. Iago thinks himself more suitable for the post than Cassio who he derides as a great arithmetician...that never set a squadron in the field / nor the division of battle know / more than a spinster... (1.1.18-23). He is not bookish like Cassio. He has practical experience of soldiering. Of him, Othello's eyes had seen proof - the same ocular proof that he demands from Iago of Desdemona's infidelity - at Rhodes, at Cyprus and on other grounds, Christian and heathen (1.1.27-29). Iago is referred to often throughout the play as my Ancient. The contrast has bitterness in it whenever he replies to Othello as my Lord or Cassio as Lieutenant. In Iago's speech on masters and servants (I.1.40ff), his true concept of his position is revealed and with it the philosophy underlying his malice if such a thing exists: I follow him to serve my turn upon him. / We cannot all be masters, nor all masters can be truly followed...In following him, I follow but myself (1.1.41-43, 57). He derides those who doting on his own obsequious bondage / wears out his time much like his master's ass (1.1.45-46) and praises those who keep yet their hearts attending on themselves / and, throwing but shows of service on their lords...do themselves homage (1.1.50-53). These men have some soul, he professes. His creed worships but himself, and his words suggest contempt for the souls who hold honesty and honour dear. I am not what I am, he concludes, yet Roderigo still trusts him, as do Cassio, Desdemona and Othello. That is Iago, honest Iago, ancient to them all but master at the same time. The first task Iago sets is to wake Brabantio and inform him that his daughter has eloped with Othello. This custom (called charivari) was not uncommon in a situation where one party disapproved of a match. Iago incites Roderigo to yell as when by night and negligence the fire / is spied in populous cities. This practical image serves well the simple mind of Roderigo and such imagery is employed to similar effect to incite Brabantio: Even now, very now, now, an old black ram / is tupping your white ewe (1.1.87- 88). If anything is to Arise, arise / the snorting citizens, it is language such as this. Brabantio's first impression of this as malicious bravery...to start my quiet is all too accurate. Iago declares that you have lost half your soul...your daughter covered by a Barbary horse...now making the beast with two backs. Iago, as throughout the play is creating an image ?

Interpersonal Communication Problems Over the telephone my boss gives me an instruction. I hear it, give my recognition, hang up then realize that I am not clear on exactly what it is that I am to do. Something about the proper way to add up my hours is the basic message, but the way she has explained it is not clear to me. Yet. As far as she is concerned, every word she spoke, that is, the way she described her instructions, was perfectly spelled out. She sits in her office confident that her explanation is clear, while I sit behind my desk like some detective trying to solve this great mystery. Although I understood every word she spoke, what she spoke does not register. No eureka bells are setting off. I have trouble decoding her words. I cannot apply the words she's "transmitted." I am experiencing communication problems. This happens all the time. As in the case just described, somewhere between her message and my reception of it, the meaning got lost. To the best of her knowledge, she has gone over a procedure that I have successfully grasped. But it remains unclear to me because I do not understand the way in which she is presenting it. To my boss, it is of course direct and sound, as it is from her mind that the words and thoughts are being emitted. However, as soon as they collided with my own thinking processes they lost complete lucidity. My faculties tell me she is talking but saying nothing sensible. Her faculties tell her her circular sentences are making sense. I periodically acknowledge what she is relaying. She keeps relaying. We are communicating. But are we really? Given this situation, one is led to consider whether it is possible that, that is, can it be that, true communication is impossible? After a... ...y did her presentation of the information pose a problem? Considering we should have understood each other by the virtue of the fact that we speak the same language, this should not have been the case. As a matter of fact, this case shows that even though we were using the same language I could not decipher her meaning. Her mind works in ways that mine does not. And if it is through our minds that we formulate information, then how can it be that what we are communicating will be received in its true form? No two minds work alike nor are their two beings which feel alike. Therefore, how can anyone know exactly what is being communicated? Each of us has a one-of-a-kind make-up. And though, yes, we do understand the use of words and their semantic properties, the fact that we even have to use words to effectively communicate alone makes true communication questionable.

The design that is apparent in the world can certainly be shown not to be the work of God, or at least God as an omnipotent (he can do anything), omniscient (he knows everything), omnipresent (He is everywhere) being. It seems that everything around us is some small cog i n a large piece of clockwork that has been intricately designed for all aspects of the planet to coincide and work with each other.The main strengths of the teleological argument are that the conditions of the world are so perfect for us to live in that it must have been designed. Evidence is everywhere. One can use the William Paley's watchmaker theory in support. Which states that: if you're walking along the beach and find a watch you don't assume it’s there by accident. The problem with this view for the theist is that the theist wants to assert that God is omni-omni-omni, and therefore would have got it right first time and would not have created an imperfect world that needs to improve itself through evolution. Yet for the agnostics this is a difficult point to comprehend as there is no proof of a god or designer.Yet as far back as the 13th century Thomas Aquinas argued that articles of faith can't be scientifically proven and that it's a mistake to try. It seems that the argu ment of the existence of god is the creation of man himself. There are some serious discrepancies between the bible and version of events known to all and the empirical evidence. According to biblical sources, man was made in god’s image on the sixth day of creation. Yet science and empirically backed sources make it clear that the existence of the human race is relatively new and was certainly not ‘formed’ at the time of the earth’s creation.The theists can argue that the bible is not meant to be taken literally, but that God still created the world, only not in six days in the way described in the biblical story. Furthermore, if humans are the ‘divine’ race then surely their existence would be found on other planets, which currently there is no evidence of whatsoever. Michael Behe came up with the Irreducible Complexity, an argument designed to counter evolution. He argues that there are things in the world (such as bacterial flagellum and t he human eye) that are so complex, they couldn’t have just arisen by chance: they must have been designed for the purpose they fulfil.Yet, the human eye is not, actually, that well designed. It is back to front for one thing! So perhaps arguments such as these are not well supported when the subject in favour is greatly flawed. Perhaps then, the Fibonacci sequence is a mere act of chance that has been evolved through natural selection as the best form of survival. After all, there are solar systems which survive due to the most fragile balance of gravity, these could easily have not worked and it is of such small chances that it has. Hume often compared the universe to a vegetable, something that grows of its own accord if the environment is right; there have been examples of ‘failed’ planets just as there are sometimes failed crops.This leads onto the delicate mix of gases within earth’s atmosphere that sustain life. If any one of these gases was to change its ratio, the consequences would be catastrophic, causing the likely extinction of life within the planet. Many marvel at the slim chances that our planet is the way it is, yet they seem to forget that there have been periods of millions of years where there has been no such life due to the mix of gases being wrong, or temperatures being too extreme.However, having said this there must be design. Perhaps not in the universe as we know so little about it, but at least within the planet. It is not necessarily true that the designer is perfect, as of course there are flaws yet the sheer detail of every item in nature is so intricate that it makes one question its design and if something had a role i n creating it. The stop and search should be objective for it to be a reasonable suspicion. However, an unreasonable suspicion would be where the police has suspected people basing their reasoning on peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s personal factors which is not objective. E.g. a personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s age, race, colour or anything similar that has got to do with their appearance. Stereotyped thoughts about images shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be used as a reasonable suspicion by saying a particular type/group of people is much more likely to be involved in a criminal activity. [8] The police provide no explanation or reasoning that is reasonable to the problem of arresting people depending on their appearance. In most cases, police explains that a higher amount of black residents are involved in crime which is not supported with any evidence that is strong or acceptable.[9] Police should not be able to see this reason as acceptable because this is a generalised belief/stereotype about a certain group of people. No evidence shows that a personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s appearance could d emonstrate that they are guilty and seeing certain groups as criminals, will diminish the amount of crime happening.[10] In January 2012, two men were convicted for murdering a black teenager Stephen Lawrence. This led to a further review of the use of police stop search powers to prevent their disproportionate because the tow murderers were racially motivated.[11] Article 5 of the ECHR is in charge of protecting human rights. Nonetheless, the stop and search does not comply with it. Despite that, Lord Binghamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s explanation, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"in the absence of special circumstancesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ show that some stops and searches may drop within the scope of article 5. However, it may be argued that in very few cases police is not wrong in finding someone suspicious when acting upon their instincts but this is very rare and this could be why some people may think this is a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonableà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ conduct. This is not appropriately effective in terms of privacy as privacy is essential for stop and search. However, using à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable groundsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ without own perceptions is much more effective and this is presumably the best option in order to increase the efficiency of stop and search. Although the police powers in stop and search should be diminished, it should be diminished to a point where ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s proportional to create a balance between the rights of the individual and the needs of the society. To diminish the amount of power used by police on the citizens in this area, the Equality Act come into force. One of the element of this act is to prohibit victimisation. [14] However, the act of the police breaches the Equality Act; it prohibits victimisation and what police are doing are simply going against that. SECTIONS 44 45 OF THE TERRORISM ACT 2000 The power given to police in Section 44 of the Terrorism Act is being used to discriminate people from other backgrounds specifically on black men and young Muslims. Also photographers and peaceful protestors are seen as victims which is another variety of victims being included in the violation. This is because the act states that police can stop and search anyone in a selected area without needing to prove a reasonable suspicion which is a violation of the Article 8 of the ECHR.[15] The stop and search powers given to police IN England and Wales are excessively overused as only 9 percent of the 1 million victims every year result in an arrest which indicate that the powers given to police are used ineffectively or are simply used in a wrong manner. However, this does not mean that the police is not using reasonable grounds to stop and search someone as reasonable grounds can also include the personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s behaviour or for example, stopping someone because they match the description of the person. Also for example, it would be reasonable to stop someone if there was a high number of burglaries happening in that area. [16] In the ECtHR, the decision clearly stated that continuing to use the s44 stop and search powers would be unlawful. Therefore, the Government introduced a Review of Counter-terrorism and Security Powers which is a review that discusses some concerns including the need for terrorism stop and search powers necessitating to comply with the ECHR. The two options recommended were either a whole repeal or a more definite and specific power that is tighter and clearer. The repeal option was rejected due to the reason that there was an on-going need for stop and search powers concerning terrorism that didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t involve the presence of a reasonable suspicion. Due to this reason, the review concluded that the power to stop and search people and vehicles without à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable suspicionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"operationally justifiedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ the recommendations were given effect by Terrorism act 2000 (Remedial) 2011.[17],[18] In conclusion, I believe that the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable groundsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ should be defined and a very open and clear meaning should be built for it. [19] Another relevant point I want to raise is that the police are thinking too subjectively when stopping and searching. This should be changed by educating the police thoroughly about what the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable groundsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ to stop and search are. The police thinking subjectively about stop and search is wrong and this can be changed and lead to a better suspicion of crimes if police are educated about objective thinking. [20] Promoting freedom is violated in the community level as some groups may suffer the fear of being stopped-searched in public. This could be classed as a violation of the personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s freedom which could be improved. Continuing to use the s44 to stop and search would be unlawful. Therefore, the stop and search powers need to be tightened up in order for it to be more effective. This means that the police can use their powers where ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been suspected reasonably that terrorism will occur. For that reason, the law needs to provide specific and a clear meaning of a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable suspicionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ to force the police to know their rights. This will be an official statutory meaning which means that police will think psychologically that if they breach the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable suspicionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ they know that they are going against the law. However, as there is no clear meaning to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"reasonable suspicionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ the police are thinking that they not breaching the Article 5 or breaching the Article because they havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t got enough knowledge about it. Therefore, by creating a definite meaning of a reasonable suspi cion, the police will think that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s necessary rather than only expedient for the act of terrorism occurring. [21] Relaxing the limits might just encourage the police to exceed their powers even more. Then this may lead to the police basing their general suspicions by taking part in more random stops. Due to this, general suspicion could become the main reason for non-stops and this will probably worsen the situation. On the other hand, tightening up of the law may not be effectively possible. For instance, the police talking to people with the persons consent should never be prevented as the police is experienced and they know what they are doing and asking the person, which could lead to the police gaining clues.[22] To change the attitude of police by education and training is a good way of avoiding unreasonable suspecting of citizens and therefore, lead to a more effective policing system.
